It lauds her critique of Cuomo as “exactly on point

A liberal dilemma

One thing to look forward to this fall is seeing how The canada goose outlet store New York Times is going to canada goose outlet uk sale weasel out of endorsing Rob Astorino for governor. It’s not grand opera, but it will give us a glimpse of where liberals really stand these days.

This is prompted by the editorial the Times issued last month buy canada goose jacket cheap announcing that it won’t endorse in Tuesday’s Democratic gubernatorial primary.

The Gray Lady is disappointed that Gov. Cuomo failed to accomplish “Job 1.” It noted that he announced his campaign four years ago while standing in front of Tweed Courthouse and saying Albany “could make Boss Tweed blush.”

Cuomo vowed to put a stop to it. “Job 1 is going to be to clean up Albany,” he said.

As it has turned out, the Times notes, Cuomo “failed to perform Job 1.” First he gave us JCOPE the Joint Commission on Public Ethics, which quickly became notorious for being a creature of the legislators it was supposed to police.

Then he launched canada goose uk black friday his Moreland Commission only to disband it months ahead of schedule, when it seemed as though the corruption hunters might start poking around Cuomo’s own camarilla.

Since Cuomo “broke his most important promise,” the Times declared, “we have Canada Goose Coats On Sale decided not to make an endorsement for the Democratic Primary.” I don’t mind saying that I admire the Times canada goose outlet for attaching importance to the issue.

In this situation, a Democratic paper might endorse Cuomo’s most promising opponent in the primary: Zephyr Teachout, a Fordham professor of law.

Teachout is a “national expert canada goose outlet store uk on political corruption and an advocate of precisely the kind canada goose outlet reviews of transparency and political reform that Albany needs,” the Times trans supposes. It lauds her critique of Cuomo as “exactly on point.”

But, according to the Times, she lacks the “breadth of interests and experience needed to govern a big and diverse state.” Plus, the editorialists confess, Cuomo is likely to win the primary anyhow.

So what’s going to happen come November? How is the Times going to endorse Cuomo for governor then if it isn’t prepared owing canada goose outlet black friday to his default on canada goose jacket outlet “Job 1″ to endorse him now?

Particularly when the Republican, Rob Astorino, addresses so many of the Times’ reservations canada goose uk shop about Teachout. He’s got an enormous range of canada goose outlet experience, having come up through a town council and the county Legislature.

Astorino won a second term as Westchester County executive by canada goose outlet shop a wide margin, suggesting he’s a skilled https://www.cheshuntteamministry.org.uk executive. He served two terms on the Westchester ethics board appointed uk canada goose outlet first by a canada goose outlet nyc Republican, then by a Democrat.

On what basis would the Times oppose him? Maybe that he’s for low taxes or for getting rid of the so called Common Core in education. Or that he agrees on social issues with the Catholic Church.

That basically was the Times’ beef with the GOP candidate four years ago, Carl Paladino. He was for canadian goose jacket tax cuts and cleaning out what the Times called the “ethical netherworld in which state canada goose store government has canada goose coats become a national embarrassment.”

But the Times concluded he’d “cheapened the campaign canada goose outlet new york city with bigotry and aimless swagger.”

This was a reference, apparently, to Paladino’s solidarity with the Satmar Chasidim (and other Orthodox Jews) and Catholics on same sex marriage.

(Paladino admitted error in the way he made his case on some of these issues and lacked the government experience the Times says it values. But, again, neither is true of Astorino.)

Back then, the Times tried to palm off the idea that Cuomo would be a “bolder and more forthright governor than he has been a candidate.” It stressed his proposals for “serious” ethics reform.

Four years later, the only Democrat who’s showing any boldness on ethics is the US attorney for the Southern District, Preet Bharara, who has convicted several lawmakers. Bharara has also seized the records of Cuomo’s Moreland Commission, and the governor’s office is lawyering up.

So where to go for The New York Times and the liberals for which or to whom it speaks? Will the Times endorse for governor the man who so flunked its ethical test that it refused to endorse him to be the party nominee?

That is, will the paper’s support for abortion, gun control, and high taxes, its hostility canada goose outlet to fracking and school canada goose black friday sale reform, trump its proclaimed priority of cleaning up Albany.
